And the “bad guy”, Sergio. Doesn’t look so bad, does he? Trust me, he is what is commonly referred to as a “monster”. I did this drawing too hastily and it didn’t come out all that great, the proportions are “off”, but I just wanted to put something up. I like having a representation of each character even if it isn’t the end-all, be-all. This is also my first attempt to draw a dude wearing a suit… LOL.

The “good guys” of Sweetheartcatalyst: Voula and Kelly/Darnell. (He goes by two different names in the story, it’s complicated.) I like how Voula came out; her look is pretty much based on the lovely Melina Kanakaredes, except shorter hair and I tried to make her look older & tougher. As for Kelly/Darnell, he’s based on a couple of stock photos of random guys, and every time I draw him he comes out different but… I think I like this version. Even though he sorta looks like a mama’s boy. He’s more scary than he looks, LOL.

I’ve been practicing drawing a bit, with the help of my “how to draw people” books, but I still usually have to look at some kind of photo reference for best results. I also completely suck at drawing clothes. Though I’m sure I’d be better if I practiced more. Oh well, next drawing: the “bad guy”!

new masthead and character art!

I made some new “masthead” art for this blog. Hopefully it looks somewhat SF-ish. The two featured characters are from a story that’s on the back burner right now.

Also, new character art! My leading lady from Sweet Heart Catalyst, Voula. I’m so pleased with how this pic came out. It really looks like my idea of her: striking, and tough. In my story, she’s the obstacle character, foil, coworker and “love interest” to my leading man who is 20 years her junior.

If she resembles Melina Kanakaredes somewhat, that is not entirely a coincidence, as I used a very beautiful pic of MK as inspiration. I’m not that great at drawing so I almost always have to use some kind of reference pic. Although I usually try use stock photos of random people, as opposed to known actors or celebrities, so that my character sketch doesn’t come out looking too much like a known person.

I’ve noticed that a few of my writer friends have been making maps lately. It’s inspired to make my own—something I needed to do anyway.

Here’s the area map for Sweet Heart Catalyst, showing three countries: Katro, Ochoroa, and Prima. The Charemi is a disputed territory claimed by both Katro and Ochoroa. My main character hails from Prima, the smallest and southernmost country. Specifically, he’s from “The Island”—a place owned and controlled by his family, who have more money than God. I’m going to make up a name for it eventually, but right now it’s just called “The Island”.

And here’s the map of Katro City and Staura, two cities separated by a river. The Estribi isn’t another country, it’s just the name for the mountain range backing the two cities. It’s a place of contradictions, great beauty and even greater squalor. TechParadise is a sprawling, crime-ridden urban area, the cross-hatched areas (The Environs) are slums, and Aselba is a huge garbage dump.

For the last few years I’ve been posting my drawings on Deviantart. But from now on I’ll be putting them in a gallery on this site instead. Most of my drawings are of my fictional characters, so to present them here, in the context of my fiction writing, makes a lot more sense than to put them on Deviantart, where nobody really cares what you post anyway, unless of course you have mad skillz, which I certainly don’t. So there
